From the Cedar Rapids Gazette:
On Oct. 25, the federal government announced a $230 million award to Iowa and Illinois to help re-establish passenger rail service between Chicago and Iowa City. Why it was just a couple of weeks ago the pork train was approved.
Republican governors-elect in Wisconsin and Ohio have declared they’ll reject recently announced federal aid for similar projects in their states. Branstad isn’t quite ready to go that far – yet.
“We’re going to do a full analysis and review of this whole situation,” Branstad said. “What are the benefits, what are the costs, what are the obligations? It’s my understanding there are state obligations and subsidies required down the road and we need to review that.”
Cut the State's future losses, Branstad! Hurry!
Right now, people in Iowa City want to buy the old depot (currently housing law offices and other businesses) and turn it into a giant empty train station again. It's currently assessed at about $400,000, but you know that buying and refurbishing the building as a train station will probably cost those Iowa City taxpayers at least a million dollars, don't you think?
