Confused Liberal Letter Of The Day

From the Sioux City Journal:
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Thank you Sioux City Journal for your Nov. 4 editorial headlined "Removal of judges sets an ugly presedent." We have a proven system of selecting judges, now we want to exchange it for a system that will be very partisan and spend millions of dollars on campaigns. But no thought is given to that.

As the editorial stated, "It became a quest for political retaliation, pure and simple."

I believe that gays should have just as many rights as anyone. It is time for the people in our country to take pause on the way they are treated.

One young man has jumped off a bridge because a friend revealed him on the Internet. I remember another who was beaten to death in Wyoming some years ago. Some others are committing suicide because of being bullied. Can we as Christians take no note of that? God loves them, too. - Myra Heuer

Poor Myra.  She's so confused!

Yes, Iowa has a proven system of selecting judges.  It's called the Iowa Judicial Nomination Commission and it's currently comprised of 86% Democrats and 7% Republicans.  We're not exchanging it for a system that is partisan.  Right now it is partisan!

Iowa has had judicial retention in place on the ballot since 1962.

Why are you suddenly concerned about gays, Myra?  Nobody is getting rid of gay marriage in Iowa.  All the voters did was get rid of some Iowa Supreme Court Justices who were up for retention.  Sure, one of the reasons might have been because some people voting not to retain were unhappy with the gay marriage ruling.  But surely some people were upset with past behavior of certain judges on the bench that had nothing to do with the gay marriage issue at all.  There are a lot of people who vote against all judges just because.

The stories Myra cites do not involve any gays who wanted to marry or were not allowed to get married.  Those were totally different cases.  I guess she thinks all gay issues look alike.

Right, because institutional bias against gays has no impact on bullying.

Yes, because bullies often research government policies before selecting targets. Or, conversely, allowing gay marriage in Iowa will stop mistreatment of gays and lesbians.

    Simpleton.

Marriage doesn't mean equality. And cramming gay marriage down an unsure population's throat won't win converts.
