Maquoketa-born George Ryan, the corrupt scumbag former Republican governor of Illinois, was sentenced yesterday to a light 6 1/2 years in a Federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison for racketeering and bribery.
As bad as some scandals have been in Iowa, nothing even comes close to what Ryan did and tried to cover up.
Liberals, of course, loved Ryan because of his opposition to the death penalty. Ryan tortured hundreds of victims of crimes through a lengthy ordeal a few years ago after he ordered clemency hearings and then commuted the sentences of all 167 inmates on death row anyway right before he left office.
I can only hope that George Ryan dies in prison, one way or another. He deserves nothing less than that for what he's done over the years.
Update: The Tax Update blog notes that after Ryan was found guilty of tax evasion and other crimes, his joking banter in the public restroom following his sentencing is beyond disgraceful.
